About this tool

What it does

CGPA to Percentage converts a cumulative grade point average on a 10-point scale into a percentage. The first thing to know is that there is no single national formula: every board and university states its own, and a job or admission form usually wants the one printed on your grade card. The best known is CBSE’s. For its CGPA certificates under Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (Class 10, until the 2017 board exams), CBSE said an indicative equivalent percentage could be found by multiplying the CGPA by 9.5 — so a CGPA of 8.6 is 81.7%, and a perfect 10 is 95%. That rule is the default here, and the reverse is offered too: divide a percentage by 9.5 to get the CGPA. Many universities use a different straight-line rule, such as (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 or CGPA × 10 − 7.5, which are the same thing; others multiply by 10 or by 9.5. Choose “My university’s formula” and enter the multiplier and the amount added (which may be negative) from your regulations, and the converter applies it exactly. The answer is rounded half up to two decimal places.

How to use it
  1. Enter your CGPA out of 10.
  2. Keep the CBSE rule, or choose your university’s formula and enter its multiplier and the amount added.
  3. Read the percentage. With the CBSE rule you can also convert a percentage back to CGPA.
Limits and your data
  • The CBSE × 9.5 rule was for CBSE’s CGPA certificates; CBSE board results now give marks, and the rule is not official for university CGPAs.
  • If your university publishes a table rather than a formula, use the table.
  • A formula that gives a result outside 0–100% for your CGPA is rejected, since it is not a percentage rule.
  • Everything is calculated in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Questions

Why 9.5?

CBSE took the average percentage of the top students in its subjects over earlier years — about 95 — and divided by the top grade point, 10. It called the result an indicative equivalent.

What formula do Indian universities use?

It varies. Anna University, VTU, AKTU and others each publish their own; many use (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, some CGPA × 10 or × 9.5. Check your grade card or regulations.

How do I enter (CGPA − 0.75) × 10?

That equals 10 × CGPA − 7.5, so enter 10 as the multiplier and −7.5 as the amount added.

Can I convert SGPA the same way?

Yes, if your university applies the same formula to SGPA. Enter the SGPA in place of the CGPA.
